Thumbing through Creative's catalog of products, you can see some of the SoundBlasters of yore, like the SoundBlaster 16, still for sale. Bordering on false advertisement, Creatives latest X-Fi isnt an X-Fi at all, its a new rev of the Audigy series using the X-Fi drivers and gliding on the PCI Express bus. Back in the virtual world, my reverie gets cut short by an artillery borage. Oh, Creative has had their competition, but by tooth or by nail, it pretty much owned the entire sound card market since. I knew that for better or worse, Creative was here to stay, and AdLib was their first casualty.
Shortly after AdLib put out their card, Creative put out the SoundBlaster and put Adlib out of its misery. Now we have cards with 7.1 channels, 24 bit/96 kHz sampling, 3D positional audio and games that can really use it. It had 2 channel FM synthesis and a meager software bundle. The Creative Sound Blaster X-fi Xtreme Audio card works fine in Windows 8. I was playing Battlefield 2 online the other night, testing the X-Fi out and thinking back to playing Wing Commander with the first sound card for the PC, the AdLib. Although running 2400Mhz memory with a 1400Mhz cpu/nb is a bit of a waste but that's another story.Does anyone out there remember playing Wing Commander without a sound card? Yeah, I'm so old-school that even old-school doesn't have a name for us ( Ed: I think they do, they call you "old") and games didn't use sound cards. But then I discovered each bar has two halfs, just hold the up arrow on all of them and the right speaker will be turned up. At first this didn't help because the speakers appeared to have volume already. I managed to sort this by setting the volume with 'alsamixer' in terminal. It was working down the left speakers only. So i swapped it into the bottom pci slot and it worked. Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook, dont think its working Hello, I just received my first laptop yesterday a Studio 17 w/ Vista Ultimate installed, well i installed the software for the soundcard from the disc that came with it but i dont think the sound is coming off of the card. If the cpu/nb frequency is set down to 1400Mhz (where i get no memory errors), the sound blaster would not show up no mater what I did. Anyway I found that when the cpu/nb is set unstably high, the sound blaster will usually show up on its own after a cold boot. I'm down to 1400Mhz now and stock is 1800Mhz. I have cleaned out the heatsink and re-applied the thermal paste which didn't make a noticeable difference. There is another fault somewhere that is forcing me to slowly lower the cpu/nb frequency year after year to maintain stability. The reason I installed the sound blaster is because the onboard audio is faulty. Ok that was a bit of a mission and the main problem is faulty hardware.
